Graham Celebrates National Astronaut Day

I would like to start off by acknowledging that we often hear about astronauts, but not the hundreds of thousands if STEMists supporting them from the ground. Mission control, those designing rocket components, those who test them, those who train the astronauts, and so many more are crucial to human space flight, even though they don’t always get the thanks they deserved.

Nevertheless, astronauts are the representatives of a broad and heterogeneous space program than we can look to for inspiration.

By celebrating astronauts and everyone behind the scenes that they represent, we acknowledge the immense collaborative effort that propels human exploration beyond Earth. National Astronaut Day not only honors the courageous individuals who venture into space but also recognizes the countless engineers, scientists, technicians, and support staff whose dedication makes each mission possible.

Don Thomas stands out as a favorite astronaut for many reasons. His remarkable career includes four space shuttle missions, during which he conducted vital scientific research and contributed to the assembly of the International Space Station. Thomas's passion for space exploration is evident in his continued advocacy for STEM education, inspiring future generations to reach for the stars. His commitment to advancing human knowledge and exploration of space embodies the spirit of National Astronaut Day, making him a cherished figure in the history of space exploration. Getting the chance to meet him and discuss his unique perspectives (and my twin sisters shortly after) was a day I will remember for many years to time.
