Nikhita’s Thoughts Before AIAA ASCEND 2025

As someone who’s always been fascinated by the night sky, I take every opportunity to connect with others who share that same curiosity. At Caltech, I’ve been fortunate to be able to study alongside peers who are just as passionate about astrophysics, learn about professors’ work, and even conduct my own research on supernovae this summer. I love learning about the incredible science that others have been conducting in the aerospace field, which is why I’m so excited to be attending the ASCEND conference in Las Vegas.

This conference aims to bring together leaders and learners from across the space industry. It gives scientists, engineers, astronauts, students, and educators a chance to unite, with the goal of pushing boundaries and imagining what’s next in our quest to understand the universe.

This spirit of collaboration and imagination is what excites me most about attending ASCEND. I can’t wait to hear from the professionals working in the field who are shaping the future of space exploration—whether it’s through designing the propulsion systems that will take us to Mars, designing the habitats that enable us to live on the Moon, or pondering the complex ethical questions that come with sending humans among the stars. These are the kinds of conversations that remind me why I fell in love with astrophysics in the first place.

At ASCEND, I’m especially looking forward to talking to students who are realizing their own paths in the space industry. I think that it’s inspiring to be surrounded by people who are asking bold questions with the intention of working towards finding the answers. I know these moments will spark new thoughts, challenge my current ways of thinking, and expand my perspective.

I’m also excited to meet the other Higher Orbits students attending the conference. Learning about their unique, inspiring paths will help broaden my understanding of the different ways to contribute to the aerospace industry. Having meaningful discussions and connecting with the other Higher Orbits students is sure to be one of the highlights of ASCEND.

As I prepare for this trip, I feel a mix of anticipation and gratitude. I'm grateful for all of the mentors have guided me to embrace the things I loved, for the peers who’ve inspired me with their incredible work in their respective fields, and for the opportunities ahead. What I learn at ASCEND won’t just influence my aspiration; it will inspire me to be passionate about the things I love and stay curious always.
