I recently had the privilege of attending the AIAA and ASCEND 2025 Conference in Las Vegas - a gathering of some of the most brilliant minds and passionate innovators in aerospace. The energy was electric from the moment I walked into the conference center, with conversations buzzing about space policy, commercial exploration, and the latest breakthroughs in technology. Standing alongside other young professionals and students who are already making a mark on the industry was both humbling and motivating. It was a reminder that, even as a student, there’s a place for our voices and ideas in shaping the future of space exploration.
A personal highlight of ASCEND was being part of the Higher Orbits panel. Sharing the stage with my fellow Higher Orbits alumni to talk about our journeys in STEM felt like coming full circle. I spoke about my experiences with the organization, how it has shaped my goals, and the skills I’ve built along the way - collaboration, problem-solving, and the belief that even the biggest dreams are worth pursuing. Listening to the other panelists’ stories reminded me how diverse paths can still lead to the same destination: contributing to humanity’s future among the stars.
Between sessions, I immersed myself in the incredible range of programming. I watched the Astro Debates, a lively, rapid-fire discussion on the future of the International Space Station. I also made sure to attend the panel that Michelle moderated, which another Higher Orbits student participated in! Learning about their unique careers was a reminder that there are so many ways to get involved in the space industry. Another unforgettable moment was hearing directly from astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The live feed from orbit made the whole room pause; their perspectives on life in microgravity and the challenges of long-duration missions left me with a renewed appreciation for the human side of space exploration.
The conference floor was a treasure trove of inspiration. I spoke with representatives from colleges, as well as companies like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and JPL, each offering unique insights into academia, internship pathways, and emerging projects. The conversations reinforced my determination to take every opportunity to learn, connect, and prepare for my own role in this industry.
I’m deeply grateful to Michelle Lucas and Higher Orbits for making this opportunity possible, for continually championing students like me, and for encouraging us to reach higher—literally and figuratively. The AIAA and ASCEND 2025 Conference wasn’t just an event I attended; it was a milestone in my journey toward a career in aerospace.
