Today, I was asked to write a blog post about how I feel now that the trip is so close and my thoughts on the matter. I should probably start by saying my first immediate thought when I saw the email was as follows:
“It’s almost July already? Wait, I haven’t even started packing yet!”
My second thought was as follows,
“Wow, these people are probably really tired of hearing about me.”
And finally,
“Oh well, I’ll write it later, I have my Go For Launch! camp to think about.”
Now, a few days later after finishing said Go For Launch camp, I can finally think about Australia. To be honest again, I don’t think the shock of being chosen has worn off. It’s been a whirlwind of summer so far: packing, Go For Launch FL, and my various art projects have been keeping me up– but it’s been great!
The thing I’m probably the most excited to see is the University of Sydney itself. When I was younger, I used to want to be an architect since I love drawing, and I loved the small details on older buildings that made them all unique and stand out from each other– especially in castles or forts like the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida.
Looking at photos from the University of Sydney, both the buildings and grounds look magnificent and I can’t wait to see them in person. I’m making sure to bring a sketchbook so I can maybe draw some of the buildings or just write my thoughts on various things around Sydney.
Speaking of bringing things, one of the items I’m most nervous about is packing. To be fair, it’s two whole weeks at a prestigious university, so I have to make sure to look nice. Since I’m from Florida, I’ve gotten used to our summer weather– which can be upwards of 90°F, and even then I wear a light jacket or at least some layers to look nice. However, when I get to Sydney it’ll be close to 10°C, which is about 50°F. That’s around the temperature of nighttime winter in Florida, where I wear heavy winter coats and stay inside watching videos of fireplaces to warm up. I’m hoping I won’t freeze, but since we’ll be indoors most of the time I should be okay!
To end this blog, I’ll be putting the words of Leonardo Da Vinci, an awesome artist and great person to quote from, “Learning never exhausts the mind”. Hopefully, we’ll all be able to keep on learning!
