Higher Orbits

Ava’s Thoughts Before ASCEND 2026

When I first joined the Go for Launch! Program, I knew I loved everything about science, but I never suspected that passion would take me to all of the amazing opportunities I have gained through Higher Orbits. The fall after attending my first event, I had the opportunity to present my research at the Explorer’s Festival in Husavik, Iceland, the same town astronaut Neil Armstrong trained for his mission to the moon —- a truly out-of-this-world experience for me. My involvement with Higher Orbits did not just teach me more about space, it also showed me the value of teamwork, communication, and most importantly, broadening my horizons and pursuing
my passions.

I am incredibly stoked to be part of Higher Orbits’ ASCEND cohort this year, as I have heard countless positive feedback from other space kids who have attended similar, if not the same, conference. Knowing how much Higher Orbits has made an impact on my future aspirations, I’m sure this event will be no different. As this is my first attendance in a conference, one thing I am truly excited about is getting firsthand experience learning about the industry and meeting the people behind the incredible projects and programs that continue to shape the future of space exploration.

I am also very excited to meet other Higher Orbits students and young leaders within the space industry. Growing up in rural Virginia, I found it hard to find others with similar interests as me. Joining my first Go For Launch! completely changed my perspective and showed me there is a whole network of like-minded individuals who get excited about microgravity research or putting bacteria out in space! I am looking forward to meeting a host of incredible and aspirational space professionals and students who, like me, are excited about shaping our future on and off Earth!

See you in DC!
